1 그 후에 유대인의 명절이 있어 예수께서 예루살렘으로 올라가셨습니다.

1 After these things, there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 예루살렘의 양문 곁에는 히브리어로 베데스다라고 불리는 못이 있었고, 그곳에는 다섯 개의 행각이 있었습니다.

2 Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem was a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew, which had five covered walkways.

3 그 안에는 눈먼 사람들과 다리 저는 사람들과 몸이 마비된 사람들을 비롯한 많은 병자들이 누워 있었습니다.

3 A large number of sick people lay there, including those who were blind, unable to walk, or paralyzed.

4 그들은 물이 움직이기를 기다리고 있었습니다. 주님의 천사가 때때로 못에 내려와 물을 움직였으며, 물이 움직인 뒤 가장 먼저 들어가는 사람은 어떤 병에 걸렸든지 낫는다고 여겼기 때문입니다.

4 They waited for the water to move because it was believed that an angel of the Lord would occasionally come down and stir the water. The first person to enter afterward would be healed of whatever illness he had.

5 그곳에는 서른여덟 해 동안 병을 앓아 온 한 사람이 있었습니다.

5 One man there had been sick for thirty-eight years.

6 예수께서는 그 사람이 누워 있는 것을 보시고, 그가 오랫동안 그런 상태에 있었다는 것을 아시고 물으셨습니다.“네가 낫고자 하느냐?”

6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been in that condition for a long time, He asked him,“Do you want to get well?”

7 병자가 대답했습니다.“주님, 물이 움직일 때 저를 못에 넣어 줄 사람이 없습니다. 제가 가는 동안 다른 사람이 먼저 내려갑니다.”

7 The sick man answered,“Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get there, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

8 예수께서 그에게 말씀하셨습니다.“일어나 네 자리를 들고 걸어가라.”

8 Jesus told him,“Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.”

9 그러자 그 사람은 즉시 나았습니다. 그는 자리를 들고 걸어갔습니다. 그날은 안식일이었습니다.

9 Immediately, the man was healed. He picked up his mat and began to walk. The day on which this happened was the Sabbath.
